  • Adolf Pansch made an extensive botanical collection during the second expedition. Collected vascular plants were later treated by the botanists Franz Georg Philipp Buchenau and Wilhelm Olbers Focke, both from the University of Bremen.
  • Based on statistical research of asteroids, Olbers' theory which states that asteroids were formed due to the collapse of a big body, was refuted.

  • Maass is credited with discovering several new species of blackberry, and for providing assistance to Wilhelm Olbers Focke (1834–1922) with the latter's 1877 treatise "Synopsis Ruborum Germaniae". Also, the botanical species "Rubus maassii" is named in Maass' honor.
