• On 12 February 1864, the "Jura" set sail on a routine service from Constance via Romanshorn to Lindau. Around 11 a.m., and despite having a fog lookout, signal horns and an attempt at taking avoiding action, it could not prevent a collision with the "Stadt Zürich" off Münsterlingen. The bow of the "Stadt Zürich" ripped the "Jura"’s fo'c's'le off and the fog lookout of the Bavarian ship was crushed. Another ship’s boy had his arm torn off.
• She was laid down on 27 August 1902 at the Cammell Laird shipyard at Birkenhead and launched on 25 July 1903. She was completed in March 1904. Her original armament was to be the same as the turtleback torpedo boat destroyers that preceded her. In 1906 the Admiralty decided to upgrade the armament by landing the five 6-pounder naval guns and shipping three 12-pounder 8 hundredweight (cwt) guns. In the bow of the ship a fire broke out, fuelled by kerosene barrels and gas cylinders stored in the fo'c's'le. The crew abandoned ship in the port stern lifeboat and two midships lifeboats.
• "Senator" conducted trials in June 1918 to test the feasibility of a flying off platform aft, with the intent of launching an aircraft with the ship proceeding full speed astern; however, the amount of spray rendered this proposal unworkable. Later (c. 1927–28) both "Stronghold" and "Thanet" were fitted with a cordite catapult for launching aircraft from their fo'c's'le (the forward gun was removed); they were used to test the Larynx, an early experimental type of cruise missile.
• The forecastle ([...]; contracted as fo'c'sle or fo'c's'le) is the upper deck of a sailing ship forward of the foremast, or, historically, the forward part of a ship with the sailors' living quarters.
