Anwendungsbeispiele Englisch
  • The name “Haslach” comes from the Old German words “Hasala” meaning hazel bush and “Aha” meaning stream. However, hazel bushes have nowadays become rare at the village creek.
  • A post office called Hazel was established in 1904, and remained in operation until 1954. The community was named for the abundance of hazel trees near the original town site.
  • Relatives include witch-hazel and winter-hazel.
  • The village name is thought to be derived from the Old English words "hæsel" ('hazel'), or a derivative thereof, and the word "tūn" ('enclosure'). Thus it once meant "hazel enclosure".
  • "Distylium" (winter-hazel) is a genus of about 18 species of evergreen shrubs and trees in the witch hazel family, Hamamelidaceae, native to eastern and southeastern Asia.

  • Woodland trees include hazel, rowan, hawthorn and silver birch. Hazel and willow are coppiced regularly. Woodland herbs include lesser celandine and wild violet.
  • Deer, moose, and livestock browse the foliage of the Eastern beaked hazel, but the Western beaked hazel is considered to have low palatability for ungulates.
  • The villages name origin is uncertain. 'Hazel-tree river valley' or 'hazel-tree ridge'.
  • Larvae of extinct northern populations ate mostly, probably virtually entirely, witch-hazel ("Hamamelis").
  • Hazel Creek was named for the hazel along its course.

  • In Europe, "H. rhododendri" is found in Atlantic hazel woodland, mainly on hazel stems. It has never been found on "Rhododendron" species.
  • The Corkscrew hazel ornamental cultivar of common hazel ("Corylus avellana" 'Contorta') is sometimes known as Harry Lauder's Walking Stick, in reference to the crooked walking stick Lauder often carried.
  • The local tale suggests that King with his people found here a hazel forest and ordered to build the village, calling her "wieś Laskowa" literally "village of hazel".
